Zi Studio

Zi Studio is an archive of multi-disciplinary exploration and experimentation by Zijun Zhao(赵梓俊).

Zi Studio explores the shifting relationships between space, objects, and people, tracing how they are formed, disrupted, and reimagined through everyday practices.

Zi Studio understands making as thinking, and design as questioning. Working across furniture, zines, photography, and installations, projects unfold through making, placing, using, and revisiting objects within everyday spaces.

The Embryo series explores the early stages of life and growth through furniture, captured in the forms of a chair, a table, and an "Embryo" piece. These works represent the potential for development, drawn from the fundamental mortise-and-tenon joints that apprentices must master. Conceptually, Embryo asks: What would a piece of furniture look like at the beginning of its life — still forming, still becoming?

The chair and table signify the next stage in the series’ growth, evolving from the raw potential of the Embryo piece. Through these forms, the series embodies a dialogue between tradition, material, and the body, with each object remaining in a state of becoming, shaped by the human hand and the natural forces of the material. Furniture, in this context, is not a passive object but an active participant in the world, carrying within it the potential for change, growth, and relational connection
