Zi Studio

Zi Studio is an archive of multi-disciplinary exploration and experimentation by Zijun Zhao(赵梓俊).

Zi Studio explores the shifting relationships between space, objects, and people, tracing how they are formed, disrupted, and reimagined through everyday practices.

Zi Studio understands making as thinking, and design as questioning. Working across furniture, zines, photography, and installations, projects unfold through making, placing, using, and revisiting objects within everyday spaces.

This installation reflects my relationship with the abandoned scaffolding I found in my hometown of Tangshan, an industrial city defined by steel and heavy industry. Tangshan’s industrial legacy, now fading, is embodied in these rusted, heavy materials. The scaffolding, once a support structure for something monumental, now serves as the foundation for a new form.

Repurposing these remnants, I explore the quiet beauty of discarded materials, reflecting on their past life and present meaning. The work bridges the memory of a flourishing industrial city and its decline, suggesting a transformation of the harsh, rigid structures into something more intimate and dynamic. Through the reuse of these materials, I consider the weight of history and the potential for reinvention, giving new life to what has been left behind.
